Police minister Serge Gelle was one of two survivors to make the marathon swim to shore after ejecting from the stricken helicopter

A Madagascan minister was among two survivors who took 12 hours swimming to the shore after the helicopter he and a team of experts were in crashed off the island’s north-east coast, reported authorities.

A search has continued for two other passengers after the crash on Monday. The cause of the crash was not immediately clear as stated by police and port authorities.

The country’s secretary of state for police Serge Gelle and a fellow police officer managed to separately reach land in the shore town of Mahambo on Tuesday morning.

The two survivors are reported to have ejected themselves from the aircraft, port authority chief Jean-Edmond Randrianantenaina said.

In a video shared on social media, 57-year-old Gelle appears lying exhausted on a deck chair in his camouflage uniform.

“My time to die hasn’t come yet,” says the general, adding he is cold but not injured.
The helicopter was flying him and the others to inspect the site of a shipwreck off the north-east coast on Monday morning.
